ISMPP Authorship Algorithm Tool

📋 How to Use This Tool

Purpose: ISMPP Authorship Algorithm tool helps document and quantify ICMJE criterion 1 contributions to inform fair and equitable authorship decisions following the ISMPP endorsed recommendations published in Building consensus on author selection practices for industry-sponsored research: recommendations from an expert task force of medical publication professionals. Learn more about ICMJE authorship criteria at ICMJE | Recommendations | Defining the Role of Authors and Contributors.

  1. Create a new project for your publication
  2. Select the study type (Preclinical, Clinical, RWE/HEOR, Reviews, Diagnostics, or Other). Proceed with the recommended weights for each ICMJE criterion 1 component or change the weights, as needed.
  3. Add contributors and answer questions about their contributions to each ICMJE criterion 1 component. Rate the contributions using the 0, 1, 3, or 5 scale (0 = no contribution, 5 = top contributor).
  4. Review the results ranked by total score (i.e., individual contribution x weight).
  5. Export results as Excel for your records.

Scoring Guide: For each question, select 0, 1, 3, or 5 based on the level of contribution. Scores are summed within each ICMJE category and multiplied by the category weight.
